When you burn a Soy Wax candle it doesn’t contain soot i.e. that black smoke you sometimes see coming off a candle.
When you see claims that say zero petro-carbon soot, and you are thinking, what does that even mean, it simply means – zero soot / zero toxins.
1. The health benefits:
The health benefits associated with using soy wax vs paraffin wax is important to note. When you burn a Soy Wax candle it doesn’t contain soot i.e. that black smoke you sometimes see coming off a candle. Soy wax therefore has zero soot / zero petro-carbon soot / zero toxins and we want to ensure our customers have the best wax which is why we only use 100% Soy Wax.
2. The melting point:
Soy wax has a lower melting point than paraffin wax. What this means is that soy wax burns cooler and therefore lasts longer. Soy wax burns 50% longer than paraffin wax, while Soy wax is more expensive than paraffin wax having a candle that lasts longer and burns evenly (which we will cover later in this blog) certainly off-sets this as the size may look the same, but the Soy Candle will last double the time. This also means you don’t have to buy candles as often.
On a side note you may be wondering at this point where does soy wax come from? Soywax is made from soybeans, it is hydrogenated from soybean oil, it is therefore a natural, renewable product.
3. Fragrance delivery:
Due to the lower burn temperature of soy wax some people find the scent lasts longer, this is of course dependent on the quality and amount of fragrance used. At Stone Sloth this is why the right percentage inclusion for soy wax and using fragrance that is specially made to be used in candles is of utmost importance to us. Soywax has a good cold and warm scent throw, which means the fragrance smells good before the candle is lit (cold throw) and while burning (warm throw), I love how our candles scent up the room, but they aren’t too over-powering – they have the perfect balance of smelling good but not in an overbearing way.
4. A renewable source: Soybeans are a renewable source. Soy wax comes from the process whereby the oil is extracted from the soybean and the remains are used for animal feed while the oil is then sent to be hydrogenated into soywax. Soywax is therefore renewable as it comes from a plant which can be regrown, whereas paraffin wax comes from fossil fuels which are not renewable. That is why it is a more sustainable and renewable source.
5. Cleaning up Soy Wax:
It is no secret that paraffin wax is tricky to clean up, whereas the good news is that cleaning up soywax is relatively easy, using soap and hot water rather than chemicals which are sometimes required with other waxes. This means no need to worry about or have to cover up spills if they happen. Also making candles is also a lot easier as the clean up when we make a mishap/mess is a lot easier – so that is an added bonus for us, just to put that in here.
6. Soy candles are safer:
Due to their lower melting point if you spill the wax on yourself it won’t burn you, infact many people blow out the candle and pour the melted wax onto their hand as a massage oil/moisturizer.
7. Supporting farmers:
Soywax candles have gained popularity in the last few years as people move to more eco-friendly alternatives, people also like that by supporting soywax they are supporting farmers.
Taking the above into account, when you begin your soywax journey you won’t look back, cheaply made candles will never again suffice.
When making your candle decision, make sure you are getting 100% soy wax: Some candle manufacturers add paraffin or other wax to the soy wax to create a soy wax blend, which enables them to charge less for the candle, but it won’t give you the same benefits and experience. At Stone Sloth we only use 100% Soy wax and ensure we buy the highest quality wax.
In summary there is more to choosing a candle, then simply the scent, and the reason why you should choose soy wax is because of: 1. Health benefits, 2. The lower melting temperature, (It lasts longer) 3. It is a renewable source 4. Fragrance delivery 5. Easier Clean-up 6. Safety aspect 7. Supports farmers
